We meet once a month to listen to recordings of a variety of pieces from the classical music repertoire. Each piece is introduced by a few words explaining something about the composer and the style of the music, and giving hints about what to listen for when the music is played. The pieces chosen are a mixture of the familiar and the less well known, so that we can gradually widen our experience of the huge field of classical music. We can also discuss and give our opinions on what we have heard.
The sessions are structured to build up a general knowledge of the classical composers and their music, and also to give a gentle introduction to some of the techniques and structures that the composers have used. The presentations are aimed at the general listener, but we hope that those who are more knowledgeable will also enjoy the sessions.
Members sometimes volunteer to run part or all of a session, presenting music that is special to them, but it is entirely up to members whether they want to do this.
Some topics which we have covered since the group began are:
Composers A to Z
Outline history of classical music 1650 to the present
Types of music — orchestral, choral, chamber, instrumental
